The degree of relationship is the degree like far 2 persons is related with one another.
Two different systems are differentiated:
- The degrees of relationship of the Roman-catholic church (the canonical right)
- The degrees of relationship of the civil right (the Roman right)

In the canonical right the number of generations from the reference person to the goal person is counted.

One differentiates between here 2 lines:
- In straight lines line
Of the straight line one speaks, if the family relation in a straight line runs.
- In the branch line
Of the branch line one speaks, if the family relation in corners runs.
